  • University of California San Diego A database indexing Social Sciences Data on the Net.
  • FedStats Access to more than 70 federal agencies' statistics and information.
  • Data FERRET FERRET is a tool developed and supported by the U.S. Bureau of the Census in collaboration with the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other statistical agencies. Datasets are from Current Information Survey, Survey of Income and Program Participation, National Health Interview Survey, National Health & Nutrution Examination Survey.
  • Statistical Universe Statistical Universe indexes statistical data published in federal, state, and selected privately published titles, at the table level. In some cases the fulltext of the document is also available. Publications from the executive, legislative and judiciary branches of the federal government; publications of state governments; publications from organizations, societies, associations. Covers 1973 to the present for U.S. publications. Selected full-text from 1994 to the present is available. Indexing for non-federal publications begins in 1980 and continues to the present. The file is updated quarterly.

  • Polling the Nations Primary data, fulltext for approximately 250,000 individual questions and aggregated responses, often crosstabulated by respondent characteristics, compiled from public opinion surveys. Topics cover social, health, economic, and political issues at local, state, national, and international levels as well as marketing subjects. Data sources are from more than 12,000 public opinion surveys conducted by 700 polling organizations in the United States and 70 other countries. Date covered varies by individual survey, from 1986 to the present.

  • Current Index to Statistics Index to publications in statistics and related fields from 106 core journals, selected articles from 900 additional journals, and 8,000 books. It covers publication from 1974 to 1997. There is some pre 1974 coverage. Updates are annual. The 1999 update indexed through 1997.

  • Social Science Electronic Data Library A numeric data archive providing microdata for research into AIDS/STD, disability in the U.S., the American family, adolescent pregnancy and pregnancy prevention, aging, and maternal drug abuse, and aggregate population, social, economic data supporting geographic contextual analysis. Sources are from more than 350 numeric data sets from approximately 200 studies produced by individual researchers as well as government and non-profit organizations. Downloadable study data include original study questionnaires, data dictionaries with variable frequencies, SAS and SPSS data extract program files, and detailed user guide. Date coverage varies with individual studies. The earliest study was conducted in 1955, with most studies dating from the 1980s and 1990s.

  • CenStats This site includes the following databases, Annaul Survey of Manufactures, Building Permits, Census Tract Street Locators, County Business Patterns, International Trade Data, Detailed Occupation by race, Hispanic Origin and Sex, USA Counties, and Zip Codes Business Patterns.

  • Census Bureau's Subjects Index
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States: 1995-1999 It contains a collection of statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States. Selected international data are also included. Data sources are from the Census Bureau, other Federal agencies, and private organizations.
  • United States Historical Census Data Browser The data presented here describe the people and the economy of the US for each state and county from 1790 to 1970.

  • State and Metropolitan Area Data Book, 1997-1998 It contains a colection of statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States at the State and metropolitan area levels. Data sources are from the Census Bureau, other Federal Agencies, and private organizations.
  • County and City Data Books This resource provides WWW access to the electronic versions of the 1988 and 1994 County and City Data Books. The data on the CD-ROMs are presented as a series of linked dBASE files with an extraction utility (GO) for those without access to dBASE or a package that can read *.dbf files. By converting these files into SPSS files and then merging them into a single file for each year/level, we are able to offer a more flexible and convienent point of access.

  • Information in USA Counties are derived from the following general topics$ age, agriculture, ancestry, banking, building permits, business patterns, crime, earnings, education, elections, government, health, households, housing, income, labor force and employment, manufactures, population, poverty, retail trade, services industries, social programs, veterans, vital statistics, and wholesale trade.

  • USA Counties 1998 Demographic, economic, and governmental information spanning several years and sources for county comparisons and profiles.
  • 1990 Census of Population and Housing The national level and American Indian and Alaska Native area reports from STF1C and STF3C are now available.
  • Current Population Survey A monthly survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The CPS is the primary source of information on the labor force characteristics of the U.S. population. noninstitutional population. Respondents are interviewed to obtain information about the employment status of each member of the household 15 years of age and older. However, published data focus on those ages 16 and over. The sample provides estimates for the nation as a whole and serves as part of model-based estimates for individual states and other geographic areas. Estimates obtained from the CPS include employment, unemployment, earnings, hours of work, and other indicators. They are available by a variety of demographic characteristics including age, sex, race, marital status, and educational attainment. They are also available by occupation, industry, and class of worker. Supplemental questions to produce estimates on a variety of topics including school enrollment, income, previous work experience, health, employee benefits, and work schedules are also often added to the regular CPS questionnaire.

  • Housing and Household Economic Statistics Data are based on American Housing Survey, Decennial Census of Housing, Housing Vacancy Survey, Residential Finance Survey, Survey of Market Absorption.
  • Survey of Income and Program Participation The purpose of SIPP is: "To collect source and amount of income, labor force information, program participation and eligibility data, and general demographic characteristics to measure the effectiveness of existing Federal, state, and local programs; to estimate future costs and coverage for government programs such as food stamps; and to provide improved statistics on the distribution of income in the Nation. "The survey design is a continuous series of national panels, with sample size ranging from approximately 14,000 to 36,700 interviewed households. The duration of each panel ranges from 2 1/2 years to 4 years. The SIPP sample is a multistage-stratified sample of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. For the 1984-1993 Panels, a new panel of households was introduced each year in February. A new 4-year 1996 Panel was introduced in April 1996.
  • Integrated Public Use Microdata Series
  • A national Census database spanning 1850-1990. The IPUMS assigns uniform codes across all the samples and brings relevant documentation into a coherent form.

  • 1990 Census PUMS This form utilizes the 1% samples of the Public Use Microdata Samples for the 1990 Census of Population and Housing for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia and the 5% sample of the Public Use Microdata Samples for the 1990 Census of Population and Housing for Virginia.

Crime

  • Uniform Crime Reports A city, county, and state law enforcement program which provides a nationwide view of crime based on the submission of statistics by law enforcement agencies throughout the country. Data Provided are known offenses and persons arrested by police departments.
  • Uniform Crime Reports County Data This collection consists of four county-level data files. The first three provide arrests for Part I offenses (murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, auto theft, and arson) and for Part II offenses (forgery, fraud, embezzlement, vandalism, weapons violations, sex offenses, drug and alcohol abuse violations, gambling, vagrancy, curfew violations, and runaways). The fourth file provides reported offenses (as opposed to arrests) for Part I crimes only. Two county population variables are included: one for total county population and the other for counties reporting six months or more of data.

Economics

  • STAT-USA STAT-USA provides economic, business, and social/environmental data collected by over 50 government agencies. STAT-USA is a product of the Economics and Statistics Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Major segments include National Trade Data Bank and State of the Nation Library. National Trade Data Bank (NTDB) data on domestic and international trade, and State of the Nation Library data on domestic economic indicators, including the top 50 government economic measures. It covers current and some retrospective data.

  • TableBase TableBase contains tabular information dealing with companies, products, industries, brands, markets, demographics and countries from around the world. The database includes the TABLE and the originating textual article or material. The file includes data from statistical annuals, trade associations, industry reports prepared by investment banks, government and international agencies, non-profit research groups and more than 900 journals. Database began June 1997, however the tables include time series data going back several years.

  • Country Finance--Country Intelligence Country Finance is a comprehensive guide to the world's main financial systems, covering banking and associated services, governmental policies and regulations, financial markets and corporate fund-raising and money management techniques in 47 countries. Published the Economist Intelligence Unit. Coverage is from 1998 to date.

  • ISI Emerging Markets Financial information, business intelligence and news for 25 emerging markets. Data are from 600 sources from countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America. Coverage for each country includes corporate profiles, financial statements and earnings estimates, industry and analyst reports, including privatization issues; capital market quotes, indices, updates and historical information; macroeconomic statistics and forecasts; information on legal and regulatory codes, politics, current events, accounting, taxation and option polls. Date coverage varies. Earliest coverage begins in 1997. Updated daily.

  • Economic Statistics Briefing Room Includes Production, Sales, Orders and Inventories; Output; Income, Expenditures, and Wealth; Employment, Unemployment, and Earnings; Prices; Money, Credit, and Interest Rates; Transportation; International Statistics.

  • Consumer Price Index (CPI) The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is the ratio of the value of a basket of goods in the current year to the value of that same basket of goods in an earlier year. It measures the average level of prices of the goods and services typically consumed by an urban American family. Parkin, 1990. This site allows you to calculate inflation Rates since 1913-
  • 1992 Economic Census Economic data arranged by states or zip code.
  • Economic Indicators Monthly Data is from the Government Printing Office Gateway through the University of California.
  • Consumer Expenditure Surveys The Consumer Expenditure Survey collects information from the Nation's households and families on their buying habits (expenditures), income, and characteristics. The strength of the survey is that it allows data users to relate the expenditures and income of consumers to the characteristics of those consumers. The survey consists of two components, a quarterly Interview Survey and a weekly Diary Survey, each with its own questionnaire and sample.
  • Commerce Business Daily Lists notices of proposed government procurement actions, contract awards, sales of government property, and other procurement information. A new edition of the CBD is issued every business day. Each edition contains approximately 500-1,000 notices. Each notice appears in the CBD only once. The CBD databases online via GPO Access contain notices from December 2, 1996 forward.
  • Consolidated Federal Funds Report, 1987-1996
  • Earnings by Occupation and Education 1990 1990 Census of Population and Housing, Earnings by Occupation and Education (SSTF22) provides data for the United States, all States, the District of Columbia and each metropolitan area for all persons 18 years and over in the experienced civilian labor force who worked with earnings in 1989.
  • National income and product accounts (NIPA) Show the value and composition of the Nation's output and the distribution of incomes generated in its production. The accounts include estimates of gross domestic product(GDP) - the market value of the Nation' s output of goods and services - in current and real terms, GDP price measures, the goods and services that make up GDP in current and real terms, national income, personal income, and corporate profits. In addition, BEA produces specialized measures such as estimates of auto and truck output, GDP of corporate business, housing output, and business inventory and sales. Estimates of gross product originating by industry are prepared annually in current and real terms. Measures of the inventory and fixed capital stocks consistent with NIPA output measures are also provided. Further, the accounts provide a consistent framework within which estimates of analytic interest - such as the role of research and development in the U.S. economy or the interaction of the economy and environment - can be studied.
  • Regional Economic Information System The REIS database provides local area economic data for states, counties, and metropolitan areas for 1969-1996. Statistics in the data base include: personal income and earning variables, full and part employment variables, transfer payments variables, and farm income and expenses variables.
  • Regional Economic Information System: 1969-1996 From Oregon State University. Presents estimates of personal income and per capita personal income for 1969-1996.

  • Productivity and Trade The following pages will allow you to study the NBER Productivity Database and the US Imports and Exports Database. The pages are primarily intended for use in teaching introductory econometrics and statistics. You can produce simple statistical output on selected variables and industries. Or, you can select to graph the relationships in the variables.
  • Regional Economic Forecasts The Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Projection database holds demographic and income information for each state and the District of Columbia. The data is also aggregated into 8 BEA multistate regions and the United States as a whole. The dataset holds historical and forecasted levels for population, personal income and employment and earnings by industry. The historical data cover 1969 to 1993, while the forecasts span 1998 to 2045.
  • U.S. Imports and Exports of Merchandise Historical Summaries: 1989-1996 This database is based on data obtained from the following CD-ROMS:

  • U.S. Imports/Exports History: 1993-1997 Contain the value and quantity of commodities imported or exported from 1993 to 1997.

Education

  • National Center for Education Statistics A primary source for U.S. education data including The Digest of Education Statistics (1996-1999), The Condition of Education (1997-1999), Projections of Education Statistics and others.

  • School District Data Book An electronic library containing social, financial and administrative data for each of the 15,274 school districts in the United States for 1989-1990.

Elections

  • Record of American Democracy, 1984-1990 Covers every state in the country from 1984 through 1990 (including some off-year elections). One collection of data sets includes every election at and above State House, along with party registration and other variables, in each state for the roughly 170,000 precincts nationwide (about 60 times the number of counties). Another collection has added to these (roughly 30-40) political variables an additional 3,725 variables merged from the 1990 U.S. Census for 47,327 aggregate units (about 15 times the number of counties) about the size one or more cities or towns. These units completely tile the U.S. landmass. The collection also includes geographic boundary files so users can easily draw maps with these data.

  • Statistics of the Presidential and Congressional Election of November 7, 2000 "Showing the highest vote for Presidential electors, and the vote cast for each nominee for United States Senator, Representative, Resident Commissioner, and Delegate to the One Hundred Seventh Congress, together with a recapitulation thereof, including the electoral vote."

General Social Indicators

  • General Social Survey The General Social Surveys (GSS) are designed as part of a program of social indicator research, replicating questionnaire items and wording in order to facilitate time-trend studies. This collection is a cumulative dataset that merges 21 years of the General Social Surveys. Among the new items added for the 1996 survey are special topical modules on gender, emotions, market exchange, giving and volunteering, mental health, and crossnational modules, conducted under the aegis of the International Social Survey Program (ISSP), on the role of government and national identity.
  • Equal Employment Opportunity File The 1990 Census Equal Employment Opportunity File provides occupation distribution and educational attainment data by sex, race, and Hispanic origin.
  • America's Children 2001 "Produced by the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics. This issue, which contains twenty-four indicators in four topics, shows overall improvement in children's well-being but also reports continuing and significant disparities, principally along economic lines. Information is presented in non-technical terms with heavy use of charts and tables. The full text of the report, including the appendices, is available for download in HTML or .pdf format. Users may also browse the report highlights, the official press release, and two special features on asthma prevalence and youth employment.

  • American Religion Data Archive Most of our data files are from surveys on American religion that are currently not stored in a public archive. Most of our data files are from surveys.

Immigration

  • INS Statistics This page provides immigration statistics from 1994-2000, as well as state estimates of the United States' illegal alien resident and foreign-born populations.

International Statisitcs

  • Statistical Data for the Member States of the United Nations.
  • International Data Base (IDB) Created in the Census Bureau's International Programs Center, the International Data Base (IDB) is a computerized source of demographic and socio-economic statistics for all countries of the world. The IDB combines data from country sources (especially censuses and surveys) with IPC's estimates and projections to provide information dating back as far as 1950 and as far ahead as 2050.
  • Global Financial Data An extensive collection of finaicial historical data in the world. Data are recorded daily, weekly, monthly, and annually.

  • World Bank Data Data are presented in two forms. Most are tables from the World Development Indicators 1998 (as numbered), in PDF (requiring an Acrobat reader plug-in). Others are links to sites containing the relevant data. Definitions of indicators that appear in the World Development Indicators are available.
